Oh, I have a new favorite author in South Carolina author Julia Elliot! This book is her third, and her second collection of short stories.
The vibe is predominantly Southern Gothic, but full of the weird and fantastical. Each story offers a glimpse into alternate worlds that are closely parallel to this one. Atmospheric, a little unsettling, these stories make you reconsider what you believe to be real, and open your mind to what could be. The prose is gorgeous and evocative. The subjects of these slices of surreality vary, there is usually an element of the supernatural, but that is never really the point. Each character’s response to these events is what really grabbed me.
If you’re into Southern Gothic, weirdness, the Old Ways, and beautiful writing, check this out. I just picked up her second book, The Wilds, another collection of short stories. I’m excited to laze in my hammock and enter her universe!
